I recently saw a Dr. Phil episode about young wanna-be celebrities.  People that were dying to be famous.  People that did not even take the time to think about all the hard work it takes.  People that didn't think about talent.  People that only cared about being soaked in glamour and fame as they walk down a red carpet; and they wanted it all to magically happen in the blink of an eye.  They didn't care about making great music, they just wanted to make millions of dollars and sit in a mansion at the top of Beverly Hills as they read a magazine with their photo on the front page!  After witnessing such greed, I had no choice but to write this article...

Remove Your Mask!

Halloween is not the only time people wear masks.  People wear masks everyday; personality masks.  These masks flaunt certain traits while hiding others.  It is called a “mask” because it is representing one of your many personalities.  When you are out with your friends, you might be wearing your “cool” mask.  While at a work meeting, you might be wearing your “professional” mask.  Everybody has a selection of masks; some have a larger inventory than others.  What if you woke up one day and your “closet of masks” was gone? You would have no choice but to be your true self.  So who is that person way down deep inside? Depending upon where you are in your life right now, some of you may not even know who you really are yet; you just know which masks you wear each day.  However, I know there is one thing you do know about yourself; you love to sing.  The big question is: Are you wearing a mask when you sing, or do you really want to be a singer?

There are so many mainstream stereotypes that come with singing.  Money, fame, and general well-being.  Those are not the reasons why people become singers (atleast it shouldn’t be).  Those should be the “and-then-some” factors.  You should become an established singer because you love the art, and you love to entertain people.  Money and fame should only be a “gift” from the public in return for the joy you bring them as an entertainer.  If everybody tried to become a singer just for the thrill of being rich and famous, more than half of them would never make it.  If you are fake then people will see right through you.  You have to make a strong connection with your audience, so if you don’t believe in yourself then there is no way they will believe in you; they look up to you.  The people that do try to become singers only for the money and fame are wearing masks.  This is a very familiar mask; the “wanna-be” or “poser” mask.  Please, do not wear this mask!  Music is art, and art is the creation of expressions from the individual mind.  Music is a recording of emotions and messages from the artist to the listener that is presented in an entertaining way.  Don’t strip away the integrity and use it for a free ticket to Hollywood.  Be a singer because it is who you are.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to be who you really want to be.  If you only get one life then why settle for anything less than what you truly desire?  Don’t let life pass you by and leave you at the end of the road as you look over your shoulder saying, “I could of, I should of, and I definitely would of...”  If singing is something that you really want to do, then do it.  Don’t be discouraged by the ratio of aspiring singers to singers that make it big.  Don’t let people like Simon Cowell from American Idol say you aren’t good enough and never will be.  Don’t be too shy to sing in front of everybody because you aren’t an amazing singer.  Don’t give up on your dreams because nobody has shown you how to use your voice.... and don’t be fooled into thinking that singing is rocket science and all professional singers were born with what they now have (they just know all of the secrets).  So now it is time for you to remove your masks. If you want to sing, then sing.  It’s who you want to be.

And luckily for you...
